I write about places where the past and present meet. I’ve written about monuments and the politics of memory, cities, museums, the history of science and medicine, my family’s history in Europe and Latin America, and more. I grew up in and around Chicago, went to college here, and attended grad school here. My Ph.D. is in modern European history. At Stanford I wrote a dissertation about education in Germany, which matters more than you might think. I was an Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities at the University of California, Berkeley and taught History and Humanities at Reed College before returning to the Bay Area, an on-and-off home for two decades. You can get in touch with me here.
